Civil Engineering students, we acquire practice experience in structural design areas, manufacturing processes, planning and project management. We develop skills that strengthen our organization, responsibility, communication and teamwork which are essential at a professional environment. As representatives of our university, the steel bridge gives us the chance of meeting different students from other universities that share a common interest. In our case, we have had the opportunity of representing “El Colegio de Mayagüez” and Puerto Rico at a national extent. This has helped us to be able to correct many of the mistakes and errors that cost us penalties at the competitions. Following our trajectory, we understand that we have the knowledge and potential to accomplish a high level of performance at regional events and obtain qualification for nationals next year.
These achievements represent great prestige for the University of Puerto Rico and define the education quality received by its students. At the same time, we’re role models for future students that will see our works and efforts as a stimulus to keep improving professionally. At the competition we obtain a better understanding of the construction materials used at the industry and work with civil engineering concepts, especially in project management and structural analysis areas.
Our group takes the competition very seriously, simulating a real-life construction operation. Once a month we write updates of our team’s project, maintain register of every reunion taking place, and elaborate a monthly financial status report of income and expenses up to the date. This serves as a guide for the upcoming teams. The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez is a nest for excellent students and future professionals, therefore the preparation obtained at the university impacts many factors at long-range terms.
